  Dallos Award   Previous Winners
With the Dallos award, the BCLA will fund a research project which is likely to further the scientific communities understanding of a topic related to contact lenses or the anterior eye. It is an annual award of £5,000 to fund a research project which is judged likely to further understanding of a topic related to contact lenses or the anterior eye.
  1. One award per year will be granted, subject to suitable applications being received.
  2. All applications must be prepared in English and typewritten. A total of five (5) copies of each application should be submitted to The Secretary General, BCLA, Walmar House, 288-292 Regent Street, London W1R 5HF. Faxed copies are not acceptable.
  3. The maximum number of individuals named on any application shall be two.
  4. Nobody can receive the award more than once in three years.
  5. The closing date for applications is November 1, 2008. All applications will be reviewed in confidence. The decision of council will be announced by the following 1 February.
  6. Applications must be for a single project or a complete section of a larger project.
  7. Projects must be completed within one year.
  8. An interim report is required after 6 months (+ 30 days).
  9. Seventy per cent (70%) of the award (£3,500)will be paid to the successful applicant(s) on winning the award. The balance will be paid after the manuscript has been accepted by the journal editor for publication in Contact Lens and Anterior Eye.
  10. Upon completion of the project a full report in manuscript form is required. It is recommended that this report should include the following section headings: introduction; methods and materials; results; discussion and conclusions.
  11. It is a requirement of the award that the results of the study will be presented as a scientific paper or poster at the annual clinical conference of the BCLA and that the manuscript be submitted for consideration as a publication to Contact Lens and Anterior Eye, the journal of the BCLA.
  12. All applications will be assessed by the council of the BCLA.
  13. Applications will be judged upon their originality, aims, methodology and financial feasibility. In considering the applications, the following criteria will be used:
    the potential contribution to the field of contact lenses, contact lens care products or contact lens-related disease;
    the qualifications, experience and proven effectiveness of the people who will participate in the project;
    the objectives, plans and promise of the outlined research;
    the facilities and resources available for the proposed project.
  14. The decision of council is final and binding. Under no circumstances will correspondence be entered into.
  15. Council members of the BCLA may not submit an application for the award during their period of office.
The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2008

Guidance notes
The following notes are issued for the guidance of applicants in preparing their submissions for the award. A complete, concise statement addressing each of the following headings should be included.

Aims and methods
Outline the title, purpose, hypothesis, methodology, methods of data analysis and possible significance of the work proposed. Sufficient detail must be provided such that reviewers who are unfamiliar with the area of work will be able to judge whether the proposed procedures will enable the stated aims to be achieved. If considered appropriate, references should be provided to previous relevant work in the area.

Budget
Provide a realistic estimate of the funds required to complete the proposed project. This section should include a break-down of the costs. Funds may be used for salaries, equipment and consumables.

Duration
Estimate a realistic period in which the project is expected to take place, bearing in mind that a final report should be submitted within 12 months of notification of the award.

Professional Qualifications
A brief biographical sketch of the applicants should be provided; this should be no more than one page.
