  Da Vinci Award   Previous Winners
Guidelines for applicants
The Da Vinci award recognises work by those who are not established contact lens researchers or experts. It is given annually to the author(s) of a completed project or practical contribution within any area of the contact lens field. A primary intention is to recognize work by those who are not established contact lens researchers; specifically, applicants should not have published more than 5 papers related to the field of contact lenses. Equally, the award may be given in recognition of a useful contribution by a member of staff within the contact lens-related manufacture and supply industry. The award will be given to the best or most interesting completed project relating to the design, manufacture, clinical research or instrumentation in the field of contact lens practice or manufacture as judged by the BCLA. Because of this very broadly drawn application criterion, each application should be accompanied by a 200 word summary or abstract. If applicable, confirmation must be provided by the applicant's employer or senior colleague that the application does not breach confidentiality.
  1. One award per year will be granted, subject to suitable applications being received.
  2. Application forms are available from the BCLA.
  3. All applications must be prepared in English and typewritten. The application and 200 word summary should be submitted to The Secretary General, BCLA, Walmar House, 288-292 Regent Street, London W1R 5HF. Faxed copies are not acceptable.
  4. The closing date for applications is November 1, 2008. All applications will be reviewed in confidence. The decision of council will be announced by the following February 1.
  5. All applications will be assessed by the council of the BCLA.
  6. The decision of council is final and binding. Under no circumstances will correspondence be entered into.
  7. Applications will be assessed on originality, presentation and overall methodology.
  8. The winning entry will be considered for presentation as either a scientific paper or poster at the annual conference of the BCLA and also, if relevant and appropriate, for publication in Contact Lens and Anterior Eye, the peer-review journal of the BCLA.
  9. Council members of the BCLA may not submit an application for the award during their period of office.
The winning applicant(s) will receive:
  • £1,000;
  • one conference package comprising delegate fee and accommodation to the BCLA annual conference at which they will be presented with a plaque and a badge.
