'Developments in the treatment of ocular surface failure using cultured stem cells'. Presented by Hannah Levis

An overview of the biology and clinical work at Moorfields with regard to the use of limbal stem cells in the treatment of chemical injuries, aniridia and Stevens Johnson syndrome.

Hannah Levis started her scientific career with a BSc in Neuroscience at the University of Nottingham, which included a one-year lab project at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Melbourne University, Australia. She then continued her studies at the University of Nottingham with a PhD focusing on neural stem cells of the cerebellum. Whilst studying for her PhD Hannah was awarded a grant that enabled her to spend six months learning new stem techniques at the Wallenberg Neuroscience Center, Lund University, Sweden. Following the PhD she took up a short post-doctoral research associate position studying retinal stem cells at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute University of California, Irine, USA, being the first foray into the fantastic world of eye research! In 2009, Hannah joined the Cells for Sight Transplantation and Research Programme at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, headed by Professor Julie Daniels. She then completed a three year post-doctoral research associate position at the end of 2011 and now has another three years of funding to continue her project in the group focussed on tissue engineering the cornea.

Members at Event

The BCLA organises a number of different events throughout the year from the BCLA annual Clinical Conference and Exhibition that attracts on average over a 1,000 UK and international delegates to the highly regarded Pioneers Conference. The Association also offers members a series of practical hands-on workshops held both at the BCLA offices and in member practices around the UK.

BCLA events are run regularly throughout the year and give delegates great opportunties to network with other like-minded individuals and make connections within the optical industry and the profession.

The majority of events are open to BCLA members only, such as our Evening Lectures, practical hands-on workshops and the BCLA Pioneers Conference and Exhibition.

Sponsorship, speaking and exhibition opportunities exist at many of these events, email adminbcla@bcla.org.uk for more information.
