Register for the British Contact Lens Association’s (BCLA) January evening CET meeting to discover what orthoptics has got to do with contact lenses.
The BCLA is delighted to welcome renowned expert in the field of binocular vision, Professor Bruce Evans (right), as guest speaker at its next evening CET meeting (free for BCLA members and one guest each), to be held on 30 January at 76 Portland Place, London (drinks from 6.30-7pm, lectures from 7-8pm).
Professor Evans, who is Director of Research at the Institute of Optometry and a Visiting Professor to City University and to London South Bank University, will reveal the top six orthoptic and paediatric reasons to fit contact lenses. The lecture is approved for one contact lens CET point for DOs, CLOs and OOs.
Delegates will hear about the orthoptic indications for contact lenses, including anisometropic amblyopia, the control of accommodative deviations, and their use in early onset nystagmus. Professor Evans will also review recent research on myopia control and its implications for contact lens practitioners, and highlight the issue of bullying in children who wear spectacles, and how this can be alleviated by fitting contact lenses. Additionally, Professor Evans will give an update on recent research on visual stress and its correction with precision tinted contact lenses.
Professor Evans said: “I’m delighted to be speaking at the BCLA evening meeting on the exciting topic of contact lenses for children. Contact lenses have been shown to be a viable option for correcting refractive errors in children at least as young as eight years old, yet surprisingly some eyecare practitioners seem reluctant to offer this modality to children.
“My lecture will challenge this complacency and will list six important indications when contact lenses should not just be offered – but actively recommended as the preferred mode of optical correction.”
