The BCLA’s David Samuels will be presenting a series of talks at Optrafair 2017 from 1 - 3 April looking at real strategies to help protect your practice. 

In a world where everyone wants a piece of your contact lens business, can you really protect your contact lens business? David’s series of 3 talks over the Optrafair event will look at real strategies which his and other BCLA member practices have used to address this issue. Being clinically excellent is a given, but if you need some tips on how to build and keep a successful contact lens patient base and their business – this lecture may just be what you have been waiting for…


David Samuel is a qualified Dispensing Optician and Contact Lens Optician. He has a degree in Marketing and a Masters in Business Administration, and is also Managing Director of Eyesite Practice Limited – an independent group based in the South of England – the first optical group to achieve Investors in People.

In addition to his Managing Director role, David coaches, presents and speaks on a wide range of business subjects, challenging independent practitioners to examine their own businesses to improve and enhance their practice performance, reputation and value.

David is a past Director and Chairman of the Sight Care Services business support organisation, current chairman of Vision Aid Overseas, and is a council member of the British Contact Lens Association.

Janis' session will introduce the problems associated with myopia, the potential mechanisms behind myopia development, and the management strategies currently available. The relative efficacy of each myopia control method will be discussed, and their advantages/disadvantages considered. The session will culminate in recommendations for current best practice and speculation on future myopia management.

Learning objectives:

1) The problems associated with myopia will be outlined.
2) The potential mechanisms behind myopia development will be discussed.
3) Available and potential myopia management strategies will be evaluated.
4) Recommendations for current best practice and speculation on future management will be made.


Dr Janis Orr is an optometrist with a registered independent prescribing specialty, and a lecturer at the Aston University School of Optometry. She leads the Further Investigative Techniques and Primary Ophthalmic Instrumentation modules, and supervises in the Primary Care and Myopia Control student clinics.

Dr Orr is a member of the myopia arm of the Aston University Ophthalmic Research Group, and the UK Myopia Consortium. Her research interests are centred upon myopia development and control, corneal biomechanics in relation to orthokeratology, and the optical and biometric characteristics of the eye.
