Prof. Jonathan Jackson is Head of Optometry at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, has previous clinical experience gained working in Moorfields Eye Hospital London, University of California Berkeley and the Australian College of Optometry in Melbourne. He has been involved in the management of patients with keratoconus for many years and has co-authored and presented a number of papers on this condition. His PhD is in corneal physiology and he is both a BCLA and FAAO Fellow. As an IP Optometrist he is involved in the management of pre and postoperative treatments involving both the optical and medical management of these patients. Jonathan will chair this webinar and will share particular experience in having been involved in the development of the BHSCT CXL service. 


Dr Dimple Patel is a consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in anterior segment and corneal diseases at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. Since completing 18 months as a corneal fellow she has been a practicing consultant Ophthalmic surgeon for the past 9 years within a busy secondary and tertiary referral teaching hospital. She works collaboratively with Optometry colleagues in the assessment and surgical management of keratoconic patients and the delivery of a regional Cross Linking treatment service.

Michael O'Gallagher is an established consultant ophthalmic surgeon with special interests in adult and paediatric cornea and external eye disease. He has completed subspecialty fellowship training in Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. He is Specialty Improvement Lead for Cornea in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. In his clinics he manages a full range of anterior segment pathologies in adults and children within a multidisplinary team, including keratoconus detection, monitoring and treatment along with corneal transplant surgery.


Dr Deirdre Burns has over 18 year’s experience as an optometrist in Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.  She is an experienced independent prescriber and currently works in the Regional Corneal Service as well as Eye Casualty, the Glaucoma Service and Contact Lens Clinics within the Trust. She has a particular interest in corneal disease, keratoconus, medical contact lens fitting, therapeutic bandage contact lenses and in using confocal microscopy as a diagnostic tool. Deirdre is also regularly involved in clinical audit, postgraduate teaching and training and has been a part-time tutor for the University of Ulster Post Graduate Diploma in Independent Prescribing for optometrists for the past 4 years.
