Kurt Moody

Global Ambassador: Kurt Moody

Tell us about yourself:
I graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1983.  I then joined Eye Care Specialists, the first licenced ambulatory surgical center in Pennsylvania where I was the director of Optometry for 22 years.  During this time, I began doing independent clinical research.  I also became a fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and a Diplomate in the Cornea, Contact Lens and Refractive Technologies section of the AAO.   In 2005 I joined Johnson & Johnson Vision Care as a clinical research optometrist and was the clinical lead for what would become 1-Day ACUVUE® TruEye®.  As this product was launched, I did a worldwide tour to speak to the clinical benefits. The next step in my R&D career was a Director of Design where I lead the team that launched 1-Day ACUVUE® Moist® for Astigmatism and 1-Day ACUVUE® Moist Multifocal.  The work done with the multifocal resulted in being awarded the Johnson Medal in 2016; the highest award given annually at J&J within R&D.  I then spend 18 months leading the professional education for the TearScience® business and in early 2020 became the lead for Professional Education for Vision Care, North America. I also hold 9 US and international patents in the contact lens field.

What encouraged/inspired you to join the BCLA?
The BCLA is an organisation that I was inspired to join because of the dedication to research and education within the contact lens space.  The organisation is set up as an excellent venue to discuss relevant contact lens topics and encourages intellectual debate.  The BCLA has established itself as a conduit to educate both professional and consumer.

What do you hope to achieve by representing the BCLA as a Global Ambassador?
I hope to be able to help spread the great work and information the BCLA does across the USA.
