BCLA Webinar: The “case” for water avoidance in contact lens wear

This presentation will look at the major factors that can lead to contact lens case contamination and review how those risks may be mitigated through proper hand hygiene, use of the correct contact lens disinfecting solutions and cleaning of contact lens cases.

Session is approved for 1 interactive CET point (C-77636 for Optom, CLO). You will be asked to submit your GOC number at time of registration. You must attend the full live session and complete all the MCQ's during the live webinar session to receive any applicable CET points. Dr Nicole Carnt graduated from UNSW in Optometry in 1989 and worked in private practice in the UK and Australia before joining the Brien Holden Vision Institute in Sydney in 1999. She completed a PhD on Epidemiology of CL Related Infection and Inflammation in 2012. Also that year she was awarded a prestigious NHMRC CJ Martin Biomedical Research Fellowship conducted at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and University of Sydney. She is currently a Scientia Fellow at UNSW, Sydney, and Chair of the Australian Standards Contact Lens Committee and Expert to International Standards Organization. Her primary areas of research are the healthy contact lens wear and the immune response to corneal infection.

 

Professor Fiona Stapleton was awarded her PhD from City University and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London for her research on the pathogenesis and epidemiology of contact lens-related disease and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at University College London.  Fiona is a clinical scientist with expertise in epidemiology and clinical research in the fields of corneal infection, dry eye and contact lens related disease. She holds numerous memberships and executive affiliations with scientific organisations, is a regular reviewer for a range of journals, belongs to the international editorial board of three journals, has over 250 peer-reviewed publications, has contributed 20 chapters to textbooks and published one book. She is president-elect of the International Society for Contact Lens Research.

 

Ms Irenie Ekkeshis is an Acanthamoeba keratitis patient leader and her efforts to raise awareness of this infection and the 'no water' campaign have been recognised through the award of campaign of the year at the RNIB vision pioneer awards in 2016. The 'no water' logo stickers for contact lens boxes are endorsed by the BCLA, American Academy of Optometry and the Cornea and Contact Lens Association of Australia. Irenie is a NIHR Grant assessor, and has co-authored a peer reviewed publication and several industry and charity research grants.
