BCLA Webinar: Sustainability in Contact Lenses
5 June 2024, 19:00 - 20:00 (BST)

Contact lenses offer a relatively safe and convenient form of vision correction, but wearers may question the environmental impact of contact lens wear.  The first part of the webinar presented by Sarah Smith will share insights from contact lens wearers about their attitude to environmental concerns.  Figures relating to the amount of waste generated and the opportunities for responsible disposal are reported.  Opportunities for practitioners to promote and share positive messages around sustainability are explored.  Looking to the future, work to develop plant-based plastics and the potentially application in the world of contact lenses is discussed.

The second part of the webinar presented by Aldo Zucaro will provide a manufacturer’s perspective on sustainability and the actions it is taking in order to address the challenges of sustainability. The focus will be on people and planet, and will address the following areas: designing with intention, recovery and repurpose, sourcing responsibly, and offsetting.
